Quality Software Engineering (QSE) Research

Quality Software Engineering (QSE) Research at the TU Wien, Institute of Information Systems Engineering, Information and Software Engineering (IFS), conducts research, provides teaching, and offers consulting services in the following areas:

  • Software Engineering: We develop, analyze and improve structured processes (e.g., Unified Process, Spiral Model) for the development of software systems in development teams of various sizes.
  • Project Management: We search for and improve practicable and robust methods for the management of software development projects. Special emphasis lies on decision-making for problems involving multi-criteria objective and cost functions (e.g., planning of quality assurance steps during development).
  • Quality Management: We invest research effort into the development and empirical evaluation of feasible, effective and efficient techniques for the improvement of software quality (e.g., software inspections and testing).
  • Risk Management: We combine and extend concepts from the previous areas to identify risk management approaches and risk assessment methods for a variety of risks potentially threatening project success (e.g., IT security).

Further, especially current, focus points of our work are:

  • Empirical Software Engineering: Sound research in process-oriented fields like software development requires empirical studies (i.e., controlled experiment in academic environments and case studies in cooperation with industry partners) to evaluate the potential improvements from changes to process parameters.
  • Value-Oriented Software Engineering: We develop and propose an interdisciplinary approach towards software development. Important research areas that we consider for this purpose are economics (e.g., valuation concepts), statistics (e.g., heuristic optimization techniques) and organizational behavior (e.g., negotiations and group decision-making).
